Blood Pressure Medicines: What Patients Need to Know
By Aswini Medicals · July 10, 2025 · 4 min read
Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects over 200 million Indians. Yet, studies show that fewer than 15% of patients with hypertension have it under control. A big reason is poor medicine adherence. Understanding your BP medicine is the first step to controlling it.
Common Blood Pressure Medicines in India
Amlodipine (Amlong, Amlip)
A calcium channel blocker — relaxes blood vessels so the heart pumps with less effort.
- Common side effects: Ankle/feet swelling, facial flushing, headache, dizziness
- Tip: Ankle swelling usually improves over weeks. Elevate feet when resting. Report severe swelling to your doctor.
- When to take: Once daily, same time each day
Telmisartan / Losartan (Telmikind, Losacar)
ARBs (Angiotensin Receptor Blockers) — block a hormone that tightens blood vessels.
- Common side effects: Dizziness (especially on standing), mild fatigue
- Avoid: Potassium supplements without doctor's advice — ARBs raise potassium levels
- Tip: Rise slowly from sitting or lying down to avoid dizziness
Atenolol / Metoprolol (Beta Blockers)
Slow the heart rate, reducing the force of blood pumped.
- Common side effects: Fatigue, cold hands/feet, mild breathlessness, reduced exercise capacity
- Never stop suddenly — causes dangerous rebound increase in heart rate and BP
- Caution: Can mask symptoms of low blood sugar in diabetics
Ramipril / Enalapril (ACE Inhibitors)
- Common side effect: Dry persistent cough in 10–15% of patients — tell your doctor if this develops
- Excellent for patients with diabetes or heart failure
The Most Important Rule: Never Stop Suddenly
This cannot be stressed enough. Many patients feel well, assume they're "cured," and stop their BP medicine. This causes rebound hypertension — blood pressure shoots up higher than before, dramatically increasing stroke and heart attack risk. Hypertension is a chronic condition. Medicine controls it — it does not cure it.
Lifestyle Matters Too
- Reduce salt intake — limit to 5g (1 teaspoon) per day
- Walk 30 minutes daily
- Quit smoking — nicotine raises BP immediately
- Limit alcohol
- Manage stress — chronic stress is a major driver of hypertension
Target Blood Pressure
For most adults: below 130/80 mmHg
For elderly patients (>65 years): below 140/90 mmHg
Always confirm your target with your doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stop BP medicine if my reading is normal?
No — the normal reading is because the medicine is working. Stopping suddenly risks dangerous rebound hypertension.
When is the best time to take BP medicine?
Usually morning. Some doctors advise bedtime dosing for better overnight control. Follow your doctor's specific advice.
What are the side effects of Amlodipine?
Ankle swelling, flushing, headache, and dizziness — mostly on starting. Usually settle within weeks.
