Can We Take Medicine in Navratri Fast and Monday Fast?

By Aswini Medicals · July 28, 2025 · 4 min read

Yes — medicine does not break Navratri or Monday fast.

Medicines taken with water for medical necessity are permitted during all Hindu fasts including Navratri and Somvar (Monday) vrat. Skipping essential medicine during fasting is dangerous and is not required by any religious tradition.

Can We Take Medicine in Navratri Fast?

Navratri is a 9-day fast dedicated to Goddess Durga, observed twice a year (Chaitra and Sharad Navratri). Many devotees avoid grains, non-vegetarian food, onion, and garlic. Some observe a strict water-only or fruit-only fast.

For people on daily medicines, the clear answer is: take your medicines. Hindu religious tradition makes a firm distinction between eating food for nourishment and taking medicine for medical necessity. The intent behind fasting is devotion — not self-harm through skipping essential treatment.

Special note for the 9-day Navratri fast: Because Navratri lasts 9 continuous days, patients with diabetes, blood pressure, or thyroid disease need extra planning. Consult your doctor before Navratri begins to adjust timing and doses for the full 9 days.

Can We Take Medicine in Monday Fast (Somvar Vrat)?

Monday fast (Somvar vrat or Somawar vrat) is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is observed weekly by millions of Hindus — many observe it every Monday for years. The fast typically involves avoiding food until evening, eating only once, and avoiding certain foods like non-veg and sometimes grains.

Taking medicine with water during Somvar vrat does not break the fast. Lord Shiva is associated with compassion — observing a vrat while endangering your health through medicine-skipping is contrary to the spirit of the practice.

Medicine Guide — Navratri and Monday Fast

💊 Blood Pressure Medicines

✅ Take every day without fail, at the same time, with water. Missing even one dose can cause a dangerous BP spike. This is true for all 9 days of Navratri and every Monday fast.

🦋 Thyroid Medicine (Levothyroxine)

✅ Ideal for fasting — must be taken on an empty stomach. Take in the morning with water, then continue the fast. Do not skip on any fast day.

🩸 Diabetes Medicines

⚠️ Requires careful planning, especially for 9-day Navratri. Metformin must be taken with food — skip if not eating, resume at the meal. Sulphonylureas (Glipizide, Glibenclamide) can cause dangerous low blood sugar during fasting. Consult your diabetologist before Navratri and before each Monday fast if you are on insulin.

🧠 Epilepsy Medicines

✅ Never skip on any day. Take with water — this never breaks any Hindu fast. A missed dose risks a seizure.

💊 Paracetamol

✅ Safe to take with water during any fast including Navratri and Somvar vrat. Does not break the fast.

😣 Ibuprofen / Diclofenac (NSAIDs)

❌ Do not take on an empty stomach — they damage the stomach lining. Use Paracetamol instead during fasting. Take NSAIDs only after breaking the fast with food.

🤧 Allergy medicines (Cetirizine, Loratadine)

✅ Safe to take with water during Navratri or Monday fast. Antihistamines do not break fasts.

💊 Amlodipine (BP medicine) — does it break a fast?

✅ No. Amlodipine is taken with a small amount of water and does not break any Hindu fast. It must be taken daily — never skipped during fasting.

Navratri Diet and Blood Sugar — Watch Out

The Navratri diet (sabudana, sama rice, fruits, milk, sweetened preparations) is higher in simple carbohydrates than a normal Indian diet. Diabetic patients often see their blood sugar rise despite fasting from regular food. Monitor more frequently — every 2 hours — and keep your glucometer handy throughout Navratri.
